Tipping Customs by Region

North America (US, Canada, Mexico) - Tipping is deeply embedded in the service industry. In the US and Canada, servers earn below minimum wage and rely on tips. 15-25% at restaurants is standard.

Europe (UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands) - Most European countries include a service charge in the bill by law or custom. An extra 5-10% is a polite gesture but never required. The UK has higher expectations at 10-12.5%.

Asia-Pacific (Japan, Australia) - Japan considers tipping rude. Australia pays fair wages, so tips are appreciated but not expected. 10% at a restaurant in Australia is generous.

South America (Brazil) - A 10% "gorjeta" is standard on Brazilian restaurant bills. It is technically optional but almost universally paid.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I tip in Europe?

In most European countries, a service charge is included in the bill. Leaving an extra 5-10% is a polite gesture for good service, but never obligatory. France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands all include service by law or custom. The UK is an exception where 10-12.5% is more common.

Is it rude to tip in Japan?

Yes. Tipping is considered rude in Japan because excellent service is a point of professional pride. Leaving money on the table may confuse or even offend staff. If you want to show gratitude, a sincere thank-you or a small gift is more appropriate.

What countries have the highest tipping expectations?

The United States and Canada have the highest tipping expectations, where 15-25% is standard at restaurants. Servers in these countries earn below the standard minimum wage and depend on tips for most of their income. Mexico also has a strong tipping culture at 10-15%.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Technically, the tip should be calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax goes to the government. In practice, many people tip on the full amount for convenience. The difference is usually small.

Do I need to tip for hotel housekeeping?

It depends on the country. In the US and Canada, $2-5 per night is standard. In Europe, a small tip (1-2 euros) is appreciated at upscale hotels but not expected. In Japan and Australia, housekeeping tips are not customary.

How much should I tip a taxi driver abroad?

In the US and Canada, 15% is standard. In Europe, rounding up to the nearest whole number is sufficient. In Japan and Australia, no tip is expected. In Mexico and Brazil, rounding up or 5-10% is appropriate.

What does "service compris" mean on a French bill?

Service compris means "service included." French law requires a 15% service charge to be built into menu prices. You are not expected to tip on top of this, though leaving small change (a few euros) for exceptional service is a nice gesture.
